My hair grows out, not down - what to do?

Hi. My hair isof medium length. My hair is straight, thick, and rigid. When I try to style my hair in any way, I have to use a lump of very strong gel. It is impossible for me to bring my hair to the side without gel because it is so inflexible. If I don't use gel, I just wind up with a bush of hair on my head, with the hair sticking out in every direction. What can I do to make my hair more flexible? Is some sort of straightening an option?

You could use the John Freida's Straight Ahead products, to make sure, there is no wave trying to form. Straightning it would definitely make is more flexible.
